Let me preface this thread by acknowledging that I'm very aware that this project is not near as invasive as the majority within this sub-forum, but I hope some of you will still find it interesting and, perhaps, spark some future ideas.

I posted a similar thread on the Org, but I posted with several updates. Since I'm done with the project now, y'all can see all of the progress. I was looking for a way to color match my bumpers but didn't have the ability to have 4+ days of down time to get the bumpers powdercoated or painted, and I was hoping to step out and do something different.

I ordered a vinyl sample booklet from 3M and ran through the color cards to determine which would suit my truck the best. Here are some before, during and after photos.

Bottom half of bumper and front fender flare done:

Removed the grille and headlights to access the upper bumper piece (note the top is not done in this picture, but the sunlight makes it hard to tell):

Whole bumper done. Sprayed black PlastiDip in between the top and bottom half to add some contrast:

Once I received my knifeless tape in the mail, I was able to finish the doors:

I'll be painting the bumper pad, bed rail caps and tailgate cap with Krylon Fusion in Black Satin. The color definitely changes depending on the amount and direction of light that shines on the vinyl. Let me know what y'all think!

Most people say around 5 years. I don't hold onto vehicles for more than a year usually, so it will last longer than I'll need it. A member from the Org said that if I applied some UV wax over the vinyl, that it will likely last a lot longer.

I've already put over 1,000 miles on the truck with the front bumper done (mostly highway), and it held up perfectly to all the bugs and crap without any tears.

WOW. That looks really really good. Maybe I should consider this... My two tone has lots of stone chips and my bumper and rollpan both need a respray. Where did you get the vinyl and how much was it? How hard were the flares to do?

This is where I got the vinyl: http://www.ebay.com/itm/13112891742...l?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=131128917427&_rdc=1

I ended up ordering an additional 4'x5' piece. You may be able to get away with the original 12'x5' piece that I ordered, but I started cutting pieces as I went rather than tracing out all the pieces that I needed in the beginning.

The hardest part on the truck was the upper bumper piece. It just has some tricky angles, and I used only one piece of vinyl on it and every other section. I highly recommend starting on the sides of the truck and the rear bumper to get an idea of how the material applies and stretches, etc. You can easily stretch/burn a hole in it when applying with the heat gun, so it's nice to have some feel for it before jumping to the flares and front bumper. The first flare I did took about an hour or so. I can now do it in about 15 minutes.

WORD. Also, where did you order the color swatch? Or are you willing to send me the one you ordered for some $$? I am really liking this idea. For mine I would just be doing the lower part of the bumper, the flares, the doors and bed, and the roll pan. Looks amazing.

I got it for free from here: http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/...0GDLC02VO6KOC13O76000000_univid=1258557487609

All you have to do is make up a company name if you don't already have one. It was to my door in about 3 days. I clicked on the 1080 series samples. I think you can click up to two things.

Ordered! Have a company, so that was no biggie... I wonder if they have any similar colors but slightly lighter. I will say though that the charcoal looks great with the color of your truck and I think it would go nice with the green of mine. I'm not sure what color I will do though. Did you use the knifeless tape for the doors and flares? How did you like it?

hmm... good idea. I think I am going to do this too. Might double wrap the front doors, rear portion of the bed, and the front bumper to avoid this. Or do the clear protective wrap over the colored vinyl

Make sure the shop removes the bumper cap on the rear and goes over the edge...

I'll be doing it myself. And I have a rollpan in the rear so this doesn't really apply. I know when I do the front bumper, I plan on removing the bumper pad to cover the edge

That looks awesome. I've been wanting to do this and was contemplating having a shop do it. But you made it look easy.
How many sheets did you need?

In total I purchased 16'x5' worth of material and had probably 3'x3' left over

Does the vinyl apply directly over the paint and bumpers? I'd like to do this but never done it before. Hopefully I can find instructions

Yup. Prep is key. I wash with just water (no soap), dry surface, wipe surface off with alcohol, then because paper towels leave lint, I wipe it off with a microfiber towel. There's lots of videos on YouTube about it.

Don't start with the hardest pieces and you'll learn how the material acts before progressing to more difficult sections.
