Based off my measurements between my two trucks...I don't see how it will ever fit. I was in your exact situation about a year ago, but mine stayed a long bed because of this and a few other reasons. It has been done before using a f-150 tank tank and excursion tank, but the excursion tank will need some extensive frame work to fit and looks terrible, IMO.
Damn here I was thinking this was going to be easy. Well, I'm glad you guys hopped in. I will be sure and get good information and pics of what I figure out. I don't really want to install an f150 gas tank on my truck. That's almost like wearing my wife's panties to me. I would like to keep my spare tire, I will figure something out.

That wasn't meant to be a dick comment btw. I dunno, i scored a very solid clean '00 auto reg cab long bed for $3500. 200k miles, xlt model...no shortbed conversions though lol
Trust me bro, my buddies gave me crap too. You should see the indside, it's much worse. I was hoping to talk him down to about 3/3.5k as well, but as I said, someone convinced him the engine alone was worth 3k, he was seriously offended when I tried to talk him down lower than 4500. Most of the damaged body parts were going to be removed anyway, but it would have been nice to have been able to sell a few of them, like the bed, gate, hood, bumpers...

Other options may be a transfer flow tank cut down, a fuel cell (good luck finding one over 20 gallon) or a custom tank.

Hmm. I saw one on craigslist for 600 the other day, it supposedly mounts between the frame rails somehow, let me see if I can find it.

"For sale is my used midship fuel tank for F250 & F350 diesel trucks. This will fit all 1999-2004 trucks that are Crew Cabs & Ext. Cabs w/ 6-1/2ft Bed. This is the "H" rev so that means only super duty versions. It is intended to replace the factory tank yet still increase fuel capacity from stock. It fits up in the frame rails to the factory mounting points so you do not have to put a tank in the bed of your truck and loose hauling space."

Around here, a clean 150k mile 7.3 truck will bring a good chunk more than a similarly equipped 100knmile 6.0 truck does. There's a dealer around my area, who sells 6.0&7.3 trucks regular cab, stripped down and beat the hell out of. Old neglected fleet pickups basically. He will sell you a '01 rclb 2wd 250, 7.3 with 200k miles, ripped vinyl seat, banged up bumpers, beat up body, hole in the roof where a cb antenna lived, etc...filthy and uncared for, for $8500.

It is ridiculous. Some people!

I paid $4800 for my 01 when I started my project. It only had 124k and one owner with all the service records. I came across several 6.0 I could have had for less.

Same way in my current search for a cc. A 6.0 is cheaper than a 7.3 and the 6.4 is the cheapest of them all.

OP your assumptions about the fuel tank are wrong. It doesnt start at the back axle and go forward. You have to center it based on your fuel door. If you leave the rear hanger in place and build your own front hanger you will see where the tank is going to line up.

This is about the best pic I have. You can see the rear tank hanger hanging down to kind of give you an idea of where the tank will be placed at.

Do the Excursion tank or a bronco tank. But you will lose your spare tire.

There is a dealership over here that has had a gray 02 7.3 WITH NO BED he was asking 14k but now he has dropped it to a more reasonable 12.9. Lol. The truck has been there going on 6months at least.

Your build was the one that made me fall in love with this idea j. Thanks for all the input guys, I'm glad I joined here, you guys just all jump in and say "no that s%$t ain't gonna work!" Lol. At least I'm not dropping two bills on a tank that won't work.

Dave, you're correct, I just crawled under with a measuring tape and the factory space is about 70". When the frame is cut the space is going to shrink down to 54". That's a very small space for a fuel tank and there is no way an f250 tank would ever fit there. Thank you for preventing an unnecessary purchase.

I found a lot of good deals when I was looking but really wanted the manual and 4x4 combo with the 7.3. That was a little harder to track down. Looking back I should have went with an auto trans, I found several in the 3/4k range with 200k miles. Does anyone have an f150 in the driveway? I need a measurement on the length of the tank. There's probably a we site with this info out there somewhere. I will just pull the gas tank off my lawnmower and slap it in there, stopping every three miles for fuel may get annoying though.

Here's a shot of a shorty 4X4 with an excursion tank.

After talking with the owner of this truck I decided this was not the best option as the cross member needs extensive mods to get it to fit. I believe it would be much easier to entirely remove the cross member and build a new one that will accommodate the tank without sacrificing strength.

The pic didn't show up for some reason on my phone. I don't really want to lose my spare tire area. I have been calling around and I found a couple f150 tanks but it looks like they are about 4" too long as well.

Wait.... just to clarify. I'm building a RCSB too, and you're saying that the 28 gallon tank I just bought off the same truck I bought my shortbed from won't fit? Why is that? They're both 4WD trucks.

Transfer case gets in the way. The front section of the tank goes underneath the cab, so when you move the rear axle forward there isn't enough space up there.
