I even looked @ page ten!!!!
No big deal, no need to explain it. It didn't take me long to find it.

I'm happy to see that people use some of the information I post in this thread.

I post my trials and tribulations in great detail, good and bad so that people might learn from what I do right and what I do wrong. Because I have benefited from others before me doing the same.

Update

We've had a week to think about the cab stretch project and its still a go. I'm slowly gathering the necessary bits and pieces as well as learning more about what exactly needs to be done.

I'm still kicking tires on 2011s and debating whether to update. I absolutely love my 08, with the exception of the stuff that I have complained about here, but the 2011s have about 20 little updates over my 08 that make it worth at least considering changing trucks.

I'm swamped with stuff that got put off while we were on holidays this summer. I hope to start building the CNC plasma cutter early next week.

Yes, except with a full crew cab extension rather than what appears to be a super cab extension in your image. And on the F350 frame instead of the F650 that appears to be.

It should be exactly like this, except in white as the basic color. Not sure how/if it will be two toned. But that is exactly how the cab, bed and frame will be when its done.

Oh. I thought you had meant you wanted an extend cab added on this whole time. must have missed the full third row part.

I can see how you might think that. The initial discussion was for a super cab extension. I balked at doing the full crew extension because it requires a 19 inch increase in wheel base, even going from the long box to the short box.

However, several people, some here and some elsewhere, all told me that I wouldn't be happy with the super cab extension and that a wheelbase increase of 19" would be liveable.

So its going to be a full crew cab section extension.

FWIW, a 156 inch crew cab short box weighs about 480 pounds more than a 137 inch regular cab long box. I expect my truck to gain a similar amount of weight going from a crew cab long box to a stretched crew cab short box. Maybe more because I'll be strengthening the frame with a bit of extra material.

You total wheel base shouldn't be much over what a 550's longest wheelbase is, should it?

The wheelbase will be 191 inches, +/-. A stock F350 CCLB is 172 inches.

Just to be clear, whatever truck I build is still getting the Cummins 6.7 and the 6R140.

Here are some reasons why.

I know that Cummins engines have their issues too, but I am way more comfortable working on them than I am on a Ford 6.4.

I've had a couple people kicking tires on my 08 F350. Its a huge turn off to potential buyers that its off warranty. Its got 112,000 miles on it. I've put 30,000 miles on it in the last 10 months.

Even a used engine for these trucks is not cheap.

Used 08 6.4 with 85,000 miles, $5995.

This guy wants $6750 for his, plus core charge.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/08-10-FORD-...pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

This one is $7500.

Its a damn shame these engines are like that because the rest of the 08+ trucks are stellar. I absolutely love my 08. I can't think of another truck that I would trade it for, except a 2011 King Ranch.

I feel very sorry for this guy. All that work and money for parts and he has the same problem he started with. I can't imagine what he is going through. The injectors alone are $4K from the dealer, depending what price break they give you.

I'll be very, very happy when my 6.4 is out. I babied it on every pass when we were on our trip. As much as you can baby an engine when you are pulling a 13K 5er up a 7% grade.

The doors and the seats arrived for the cab stretch.

Thrilling, I know. Try to hold back your outburst !

I'm picking things up slowly, looking for bargains.

I have a line on a cab and frame. The hardest component to find to do the stretch is a short box in good condition.

If all else fails shorten your long box. Can't be any more complicated then the cab. Seen a couple custom shortened Boxs that look factory.

I was considering that, but it doesn't look that easy. I'm not a body man either though.

The front of a box side has a rolled edge where it connects to the front box panel itself. How do you keep that rolled edge ?

I'd love to figure this out. The box is really the only outstanding issue on extending the cab. I think I have everything else worked out.

If I figured out how to shorten a box, I could create a box that is a custom length, which would be neat.

I'd love to see pictures of a shortened box or talk to someone who has done it.

My dad is strongly advising me to upgrade to a 2011 truck for this project.

I'm trying to keep costs down and yet on the other hand it seems like spending the money to upgrade to a newer truck is wise, especially when we intend to keep this truck for a long time.

I keep thinking about the side curtain airbags that the 2011s have. I'd feel awful if we had an accident and didn't have them. I've never had an accident, but it can happen to anyone.

That is the reason i have decided not to build my truck up and just go get a 6.7. Next year....

So its not just me then. Thanks for sharing that.

The other thing I like about the 2011s is the electric locking rear axle. Short of building a custom axle, I can't put one on my 2008.

My 2008 has 3.73 gears and Ford doesn't put 3.73 gearing in SRW diesel trucks anymore. Only 3.31 and 3.55. The 3.73 gearing does come in the SRW gasser trucks, but I strongly suspect they only use 2 pinion gears in the diff, versus 4 for the diesel trucks.
